A lesson on why being honest isn't always profitable...
For several years, we've told visitors who asked us, which of the penny sites we liked. We told them. Really. If they decided not to go with us, or wanted more picks and asked about other sites, we mentioned a few, but routinely directed them to one site in particular. The owner of that website was never told. We just told the truth to our visitors. As we always do.
It is entirely possible that many dozens of people signed up to that website in addition to ours because we - a competitor - actually said nice things about them.
Well, we were recently told by one of the very people we recommended it to, that our site was mentioned discursively as "cheaper" - and that it must be for a reason (The implication being we're not as good).
AND that was directly after complaining about unethical tactics used by another website making it seem to readers that we are engaged in those practices. As we don't snoop around other's sites, we had no idea this was up there and no idea how long its been there.
Sad. We guess they're just greedy like the others and will disparage anyone else to make a few bucks. All the while doing the same thing they complain others are doing. Their readers are the ones that lose.
Was it dumb to honestly recommend a reader visit a competitor?
...Maybe.
...But it was being honest.
...We sleep well.
We post all of our past picks to everyone, including non-members, because we're proud of our work. It's called being open and helps them decide if we're right for them. They can then look up the picks and see if it's the kind of stocks they want to spend their money on. If so, great! If not, they can move on. It's called honesty.
We could hide them and then refer to our "no refund'" policy after it's too late. And then a year later, charge you again because you forgot to cancel by a certain date. As if you have nothing better to do than worry about a renewal date for a website, right? Don't forget their no refund policy!
Treating readers like that is the easy, unethical way. The way you would never treat friends or family. We don't have to hide our picks until we get your money. We don't earn your business until you actually see what we've done in the past. Our entire past.
Here's why we cost less - for the record:
Some other websites spend as much as $80.00 in advertising or affiliate fees for every customer that signs up. It's documented. What's our advertising budget? ZERO! That's right... we're 100% word-of-mouth, and we pass that savings on to you. So, we're cheaper because we don't have to advertise. I wonder why? It's not because we're not as good. It's the exact opposite. And we're honest.
Oh... And we don't have scantily clad animated women pop up every time you visit talking you into handing over money. But at least it's not a "useless" video like some sites have. Or is it?
